Carol Morgan Trio (BBM015)
Carol Morgan is one of the most unique voices on the trumpet to come along in years. Also gutsy. How many trumpet trio records are there? How many musicians on any instrument have the confidence to play without chordal accompaniment?
That said, she is wonderfully supported by her bandmates. Harvie S is the perennial favorite NY bassist, heard on literally hundreds of recordings with jazz greats like Mike Stern, Sheila Jordan, and countless others. Drummer DeRosa is also quite accomplished, and uniquely musical. Perhaps his position as head of the arranging dept. at Julliard has something to do with that. Or is it the other way around? Regardless, the rhythm section lays down beautifully spacious, yet solid support for Carol's musings, and stretches out nicely on their own as well.
Each of them contributes compositions, and those are supplemented by their wonderful interpretations of standards like their one of a kind Latin ballad rendition of Nica's Dream, or the chops heavy reading of Bud Powell's Celia or Kenny Dorham's Prince Albert. Jimmie VanHeusen's Like Someone In Love is sentimental, without being sappy. Everything feels fresh, and uniquely their own, which is obviously the goal of any jazz musician.
Special guest, saxophonist Woody Witt adds just the right extra touch on 2 of the 8 tracks.
The key to a record like this is the use of negative space and these cats know well how to make the most of it. A brave effort, yet completely accessible.
