Woody Witt (BBM012)
6 original compositions by Amsallem, Witt, and bassist
David Craig, are augmented by Ornette Coleman’s
“Chronology.” “South of Dallas” and “First Impression” are
Witt’s two contributions to the playlist, the former setting
the tone for the entire project. “Northern Face” and “Dear
John”are both mature and deeply felt pieces by David Craig.
Amsallem presents his observations on beaurocracy with
“Standard Form Requirement,” and the expansive “Gotham
Goodbye.”
This is a swinging collection, by a group of seasoned
professionals, obviously hitting it off. Sebastian Whittaker’s
drumming anchors everything beautifully, and with
wonderful creativity. Craig’s bass is always well placed, in
the groove, solos lovingly crafted with a master’s touch.
Amsallem and Witt compliment each other beautifully.
Witt has begun to amass an impressive discography featuring
Tim Hagans, Randy Brecker, Ed Soph, Fred Hamilton, Lynn
Seaton, and many others. Amsallem has recorded a CD with
“A listers” Bill Stewart and Gary Peacock. Both men have laid
impressive foundations to what are certain to be extensive
and significant contributions to the best of contemporary jazz.
Both are perfect examples of what Blue Bamboo Music is all
about. Namely, brining recognition to deserving, developing,
and important new artists.
